Job Description

  • We are searching for a Chief Operating Officer (COO) for our entire trading businesses who has strong leadership skills and the ability to approach business with a creative point of view.
  • The role of a Chief Operating Officer (COO) in the mining industry is critical for ensuring the safe and profitable operation of mining activities
  • The Chief Operating Officer is accountable for the safe and profitable operation of all mining, processing, port, haulage, technical services and other general services activities, and is responsible for ensuring they comply with all Company processes.
  • The COO will lead our team of high-performing professionals to be efficient, productive, and effective. The ideal candidate should have extensive experience in Nigerian mining industry and all legal regulatory framework within the industry, preferably having worked their way up to an executive role. We believe this trajectory helps a person develop a unique mix of business and management expertise, plus proficiency with the practices, policies, and procedures of our industry.

Objectives of this Role

  • Collaborate with CEO in setting and driving organizational vision, operations strategy.
  • Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth, implementing organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual operations planning
  • Oversee company operations and employee productivity, building a highly inclusive culture that ensures team members can thrive and that organizational goals are met
  • Ensure effective recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention
  • Ensure compliance with national and local business regulations in relation to mining industry, and take appropriate action when necessary
  • Have good knowledge of Nigerian mining terrene and the locations of key mineral resources within the Nigeria and West Africa.
  • Ability to communicate in French language will be an added advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the organisation in meeting the company’s environmental, health and safety system requirements.
  • Oversee business operations within Nigeria and West African Region
  • Set and deliver physicals, operating cost and capital budgets and forecasts to meet annual corporate objectives whilst maximising project value.
  • Review performance & adjust to a changing market, by optimising production plans and monitoring performance to adjust those plans as required.
  • Participate in the development of marketing, product development and resource development strategies.
  • Manage activity costs by developing cost management processes and financially responsible culture
  • Ensures the workforce is informed on direction and targets through a coordinated communication and re-engagement plan.
  • Supports the CEO in the management of relationships with external stakeholders through a coordinated approach including attendance at regular meetings
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with key customers, clients, partners, and stakeholders
  • Delivery of EBIT / ROC targets and actual performance by identifying opportunities, providing resources and executing action plans. In particular focus needs to be maintained on value accretive opportunities.

Qualifications

  • University Education in Minerals Processing, Engineering, Geology and any related discipline
  • 5-10 years in a senior management role
  • Successful track record in leading the management of complex minerals processing and mining operations including managing multiple sites simultaneously
  • Experience in operating in within Nigeria and West Africa or similar environment
  • Post-graduate qualifications in business management will be an added advantage
  • Significant technical knowledge of minerals processing and mining.

  • Thinks strategically and innovatively on operational and technical aspects of the business
  • An ability to coach and mentor direct reports to improve their performance and impact.
  • Ability to direct and motivate colleagues and contractors.
  • An ability to develop team members at all levels, with the requirement to develop formal training programs and provide support to enhance employee skillsets.
  • Proficiency in managing relationships and building networks.
